Message So continuing on with the turbo area....

Intake adaptors are done. Next item up is the MSP intake pipes. I had held off on installing these for awhile. In order to get the benefit of these, you need new intake pipes that replace the stock accordian pipes. The stock accordian pipes are actually smaller than 2.5" if you cut them open. You can also see this by just looking into the end of them. So no point in using a restrictive intake pipe with a nice flowing turbo intake pipe. Also the MSP pipe openings sit in different areas than stock so you have to use adaptors to get the stock accordian pipes to mount up. Mike planned on having a new intake pipes made, but he hasn't got that far yet. This is also why the turbo intakes are not on the market yet (and don't ask me about getitng you a set either please).

Old versus new

As you can see in the pics I went ahead and installed a new alternator and the new wiring harness for it that has been sitting on the shelf.

So the next step was to make some new intake pipes to replace the accordian pipes. Got out my cheap tabletop band saw and started chopping. Once I got the layout down I had a local guy weld it all togther for me. I used -8AN fittings and weld on bungs for the PCV hook ups. Fit perfect into the stock hoses.

This was the first set. Roughing out the design and marking it up. Drivers side was pretty simple. 2 different bends total so just 2 pipes cut to length.

Drivers side was a little more involved due to the AC hoses. I could have made it a little tighter to hug the ac hoses closer, but it fits and works as is so I left them.

Then the issues. I got the pipes back from welding and having the edges rolled and went to put them in the car. WTH, they don't fit now. Both sides were way short. I don't know what happened but I have some ideas. Wasn't something I did as I had them tacked together and installed in the car before they were finish welded. Time to start over.

So I made up another set and did it all over again. This time I left the pipes extra long. Then after he welded them I cut the ends to size and and had the ends barbed. I have a feeling he messed up barbing the ends the 1st time around so he cut off the bad section and redid the barb. This time they fit right.

I made up a quick powdercoating booth so I didn't have to get my large one out. Threw on some color.

While I was using the mills at my buddies shop I went ahead and modified my downpipes. I had a set of the new SZ 3" downpipes sitting on the shelf for about a year. But didn't want to install them when I knew the car was running like crap. The PE1420's have a divider built into the exhaust housing already. Normally I just don't run the divider that comes with the down pipes and I plug the screw holes. The turbo divider doesn't come all the way to the edge so there is a small gap. So I milled down the divider, remilled the holes, and chamfered the edges.

Got it all back together, boost leak test time. Ugh, drivers side throttle body shaft seal is leaking. Took the TB off and tore it all apart. You might have saw my post in Techincal about getting the end plates off so I could get to the seals. Got to buy a new tool so that helps offset the last min grief. Replaced the seal and everything is good.

Got everything together last week. Put on my new SZ 3" downpipes, 3"-2.5" test pipes. Started her up and could notice the difference immediately. It used to stumble like crazy when cold and I would give it gas. It would hardly drive at all. It runs great now. Took it out for a mountain run yesterday. I love being able to pass people now :). 18 psi comes on almost too fast. Boost seems to come on about 1k sooner as well. I have the low end I want and now I can actually feel the boost. Now I need to play with and redo the tune again as I loaded the stock JWT 740 DP program to remove all the changes I made before when I was troubleshooting. So it should get even better.

Now that this car is back together and running, it's time to start bolting the track car together. It never ends.
